Call Of Duty: Black Ops: The Pinnacle Of The Linear Military Shooter Experience

The Call of Duty: Black Ops has “easily the most cogent and well-constructed story we’ve seen from the Call of Duty franchise in a number of years.” Could it be, that's the single-player mode is actually worth a damn this time around?

You’ll recall that, for much of yesterday, I spent an inordinate amount of time, probably around three minutes, defending the idea that Half-Life 2's single-player campaign is better than any other first-person shooter’s released since then. You know, as if saying “Half-life 2 is good” is something controversial. Hmm.

The big gaming sites all have their reviews, with The Mighty IGN giving it an 8.5. The very fact that it’s less than a 9.0 should send shockwaves throughout the Milky Way, but let’s not forget: an 8.5 is very good!

The game launched last night with a big party in California. Metallica closed out the event. They played some hits, including a few songs off Black (their best album, obviously).

One thing’s for sure: those guys don’t come cheap, so you know Activision set aside a few dollars in the marketing budget to put that together.

IGN notes repetitive gameplay (“You can’t help but feel that both the single- and multiplayer could use some new life beyond just adding bigger and badder explosions (like smarter AI)”, which is my main beef with the FPS genre these days. It all feels so same-y.

I will say: I played the new Deus Ex a few weeks, and it looks to be just what the genre needs in terms of “hey, something new!”

And for those of you who are fans of multi-player (for some reason): the Guardian calls it “skillfully constructed and breathtakingly expansive.” You’ve got 14 maps right now, but I’m sure there will be map packs in the future.

There are zombies, too, like in World at War.

So the game, “ the pinnacle of the linear military shooter experience,” is just fine. No one expected otherwise, myself included, it’s just that I’ve grown tired of the repetition found in the genre as a whole.

Laser-Based Pico Projector From Aaxa

The pico projectors with laser-based light sources. Microvision updated its ShowWX line just the other day, and now here’s AAXA’s, traditionally a lower-cost option. And depending on your needs, it might actually be a better fit.

The AAXA L1 has 20 lumens to the ShowWX+’s 15, and an 800×600 resolution versus 848×480. Microvision claims a higher contrast ratio but the AAXA costs $50 less. So there’s a lot to decide between. I’d say if you’re planning to do games or media, go with the ShowWX, since it’s naturally widescreen, but if you’re doing pictures or presentations, the L1 is better.

And for the record, I’ve got the ShowWX+ right here next to me, and it’s tiny, so there’s that as well. Fun times for the pico projector fan.

Samsung showcases 4.5-inch flexible AMOLED, Flexi It's

For all intents and purposes, every single flexible display we've seen over the past few years has eventually been filed in the "awesome things that'll never materialize" drawer. There are exceptions to that rule, mind you, but we've largely been frustrated by how often these things pop up at trade shows and then vanish forever. Samsung Mobile Display, however, is hoping to change that. According to reports stemming from FPD International 2010, this here 4.5-incher is dangerously close to production, and given the lustworthy 800 x 480 resolution, we couldn't be more excited about the possibilities. We're told that Samsung is eschewing the traditional glass substrate in favor of a newfangled plastic version, and evidently it's a heck of a lot easier to mass produce. After all, we're still waiting for this thing, guys.

Wizup Surfaces From Windows Phone 7 Developer.

It's not a brand new or anything, but rather than forcing mobile users to scan QR codes in order to access more information about a given product or advertisement, Wizup is able to recognize far more esoteric items. Created as a part of the Windows Phone 7 developer challenge, this piece of software is able to listen to radio stations (at least in France), understand images from magazines and even recognize TV channels. Simply snap a picture or let it listen in (much like Shazam for song titles), and it then delivers all sorts of germane content to the mobile's screen. It's a dream come true for marketers, but better still, it makes digging for more information a whole lot easier on the end user. Head on past the break for a demonstration video -- if you've been denying it thus far, good luck as you continue to resist the

Sony's 13-inch VAIO Z Line Gets Updated, And It's Going To Cost You

Think Apple's is the one overpriced ultraportable? Have a gander at the build sheet for Sony's refreshed VAIO Z. The same machine that we took a peek at this February has seen a predictable fall update, right alongside legions of other Sony lappies. The 13.3-inch machine can now be ordered with a presumably lap-melting Core i5-460M (2.53GHz), Core i5-580M (2.66GHz) or Core i7-640M (2.8GHz), an optional carbon fiber colored casing, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 256GB or 512GB SSD, optional Blu-ray Disc burner, an SDXC card reader and NVIDIA's GeForce GT330M graphics card. Oh, and did we mention that there's a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution on this thing? Maybe that explains the $2,249.99 starting price.

iControl and uControl engage in home automation merger, domestic disputes seem inevitable

iControl and uControl
Come one, come all -- we're guessing you won't want to miss the most comical business arrangement since the latter part of 2007, when ROK acquired a majority share of Rock. Believe it or not, have somehow put their selfish ways aside to come together as one, but it's pretty clear who's really in control. The merged company will forge ahead as iControl Networks, leaving u with nothing but fading memories and half a bottle of Jack. In all seriousness, this melding of minds could definitely give the home automation world a boost it's badly in need of; fragmentation and a lack of universal compatibility (not to mention stratospheric pricing) has severely hindered adoption in the consumer universe, and we're hoping that these guys can somehow make ZigBee, Z-Wave and your ZR1 talk to each other sans any hoop jumping. 'Course, we wouldn't expect any sort of quick collaboration -- these two have to get on speaking terms before any magic happens, you know?
iControl and uControl Announce Merger Agreement

The merger combines the two market leaders in broadband home management, and promises to deliver a best-in-class solution that includes interactive home security, energy management and home health care solutions to broadband service providers, home security companies and utilities. The combined company has launched commercially with several service providers and will announce additional deployments in the near future. All commercial trials and deployments will continue as planned.

The merged company will retain the name iControl Networks and will be headquartered in Palo Alto, California with a division in Austin, Texas. iControl CEO Paul Dawes and uControl CEO Jim Johnson will both remain in their roles and serve as co-CEO's of the new iControl Networks.

"Through this merger, iControl and uControl have combined our respective strengths to deliver the best platform for the broadband home management market," said Paul Dawes, co-CEO of iControl. "Whether it's support for industry-leading IP video monitoring, innovative iPhone and Android apps, or cutting edge ZigBee and Z-Wave technology, the new iControl will offer the most comprehensive, innovative solution available."

"This is a rare opportunity where everyone benefits," said Jim Johnson, co-CEO of iControl. Sylvania's 7-inch Android tablet now ready to....

Sylvania 7inch Tablet
Not down with coughing up serious cash for a serious Galaxy Tab? Great news, Bargain Ben: you've got options. Joining the raft of cut-rate, low-priced tablets is a new one from Sylvania, which is humorously described as a "7-inch MID tablet." Details are scarce, but it's rocking Android 2.1, an 800 x 480 screen resolution, six-hour battery, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of Flash memory, front-facing camera and a microSD card slot. You'll also get 802.11b/g WiFi, a pair of mini-USB sockets, HDMI output and what we're assuming is a resistive touchpanel. We'd say the chances of Android Market access are slim to none, but for just $179.99, who really cares if it functions?

OCZ RevoDrive X2 PCIe SSD reviewed

Hard to say why OCZ Technology pushed out revision two of its RevoDrive so soon after the original launched, but it's hard to complain with numbers like this. Just in time to shock the performance hound in your life with an outlandish Christmas gift comes the RevoDrive X2, and this here PCIe SSD solution has now been benchmarked to the hilt. The bottom line? It's fast. Really fast.
ocz revodrive x2 pcie ssd
In fact, Hot Hardware calls it "simply one of the fastest PCI Express based SSD solutions" that they have tested, noting that it went toe-to-toe with Fusion-io's ioXtreme while costing a good bit less. Critics over at Tweak Town echoed those thoughts, and while both teams felt the $680 asking price for a 240GB model was a touch pricey, neither felt that it wasn't worth it if you've got the coin laying around. Zaggmate iPad keyboard Case To The Res"Q"

zaggmate ipad case

There's a market for iPad cases with accompanying keyboards. If none of the other options that have emerged over the past few months tickled your fancy, Zagg is introducing yet another to mull over. The Zaggmate actually does manage to differentiate itself fairly well from the competition, with two models being available: one with a keyboard and one without. This clip-on stand can elevate your iPad (positioned horizontally or vertically) for easier viewing, and the "with keyboard" model obviously throws out a full QWERTY set to make those Pages creations somewhat easier to bang out. Currently, Zagg's got this one listed as 'Coming Soon,' with the standard model carrying a $69.99 price tag and the keyboard edition demanding an extra $30. Peek 'em both in their YouTube debuts just after the break.

According to the badly formatted flyer pictured above, The Shack will be the first B&M location to stock the US version of the HTC Desire Z, and it'll be hawking 'em for $149.99 on a two-year postpaid contract starting October 3rd. Windows 7: The Missing Manual

Windows 7: The Missing ManualOriginal manual for Windows 7.

Product Description

In early reviews, geeks raved about Windows 7. But if you're an ordinary mortal, learning what this new system is all about will be challenging. Fear not: David Pogue's Windows 7: The Missing Manual comes to the rescue. Like its predecessors, this book illuminates its subject with reader-friendly insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners as well as veteran PC users.

Windows 7 fixes many of Vista's most painful shortcomings. It's speedier, has fewer intrusive and nagging screens, and is more compatible with peripherals. Plus, Windows 7 introduces a slew of new features, including better organization tools, easier WiFi connections and home networking setup, and even touchscreen computing for those lucky enough to own the latest hardware.

With this book, you'll learn how to:

  • Navigate the desktop, including the fast and powerful search function
  • Take advantage of Window's apps and gadgets, and tap into 40 free programs
  • Breeze the Web with Internet Explorer 8, and learn the email, chat, and videoconferencing programs
  • Record TV and radio, display photos, play music, and record any of these to DVD using the Media Center
  • Use your printer, fax, laptop, tablet PC, or smartphone with Windows 7
  • Beef up your system and back up your files
  • Collaborate and share documents and other files by setting up a workgroup network
Review:

The book is written in Pogue's clear, easy-to-read, and entertaining style. Through it all, he maintains his sense of humor. It covers most everyone from the most basic beginner to the the advanced super user, although the most sophisticated users won't need much from this book. But even for them, it includes some handy pointers and reference material.

It provides a complete Windows 7 manual, with everything from how to install (Appendix A), to Windows basics (using Windows, file management and search, and setting your desktop) to finding and installing programs, to connecting to and using the Internet, to advanced features like joining a domain and VPN. And it covers everything else in between.

New features like Libraries and Jump Lists are covered nicely. He even describes the Library problems where you can't add a network location to a Library without making that folder available off-line. He correctly points out that this copies that entire folder onto the local hard drive, so you probably don't want to do this.

I especially liked that when features were missing from a particular version of Windows 7, Pogue points that out. He also points out when a feature is available only on certain versions. For example, Aero is not available in Windows 7 Starter Edition, and he points that out when talking about Aero.

The book provides special help for people transitioning from XP and Vista. When he can, Pogue compares things to the way they used to be in XP and/or Vista. For example, he explains how the Start menu and taskbar have changed from both earlier versions.

He also offers handy sidebars with tips and other related information throughout the book. For example, in the section that teaches you about faxing, he has a sidebar on how to create your own fax cover page.

One of my favorite features of the book are the extraordinarily useful keyboard shortcuts. He provides shortcuts for every situation that has one. In addition, he provides a full keyboard reference in Appendix D.

This is truly the Missing Manual for Windows 7. It is not, however, a reference manual. It's designed to be read like a book. And it's a really good book.
